Johnson Sauk Trail State Park

Johnson-Sauk Trail State Park is for all seasons and offers exploration of fields of wildflowers, an opportunity for a lazy summer picnic amidst the giant oaks, fall colors with cool night, or fun in the snow with cross-country skiing. It is a recreational destination offering untouched natural beauty.

The recreation area is located on a Trail that Sauk Indians used in their treks between Lake Michigan and the confluence of the Mississippi and Rock Rivers. The recreation area’s centerpiece is the 58-acre lake with two and a half miles of shoreline with boating and fishing opportunities.  A hidden secret fisherman’s paradise the lake is stocked with largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, bullhead, muskie, and northern pike.

You will experience a rolling prairie, pine plantation, and inside bottomland forests.  Hike the trails and find an array of woodland and prairie wildflowers.  Early spring brings skunk cabbage, a rare prairie find that sometimes blossoms in the snow. White-tailed deer, raccoons, squirrel, opossum, and rabbits are among the myriad of wildlife found in the park. Birders have ample opportunities to catch sight of chickadees, nuthatches, goldfinches, and hundreds of other avian visitors.

Johnson Park is one of the DNR’s most popular hunting sites.  Pheasants are released daily during the season.  Pursue a deer with your bow and arrow or shoot your shotgun for dove and squirrel.  Reservations and fees are required.

Gather the troops, pack the picnic basket (nine picnic areas are available to choose from with tables and cooking stoves) and head to Johnson Sauk Trail State Recreation Area.  The park is located six miles south of Interstate 80 and five miles north of Kewanee on Illinois Route 78.  Travel the back roads to 1,365 acres of recreational opportunities.  Johnson Sauk Trail State Recreation Area Map, Johnson Sauk Trail State Park, Lake Info
