“Pie in the Sky” Joe Hill, an Inspiration to Generations of Musicians

Joe Hill Swedish American

The American Swedish Historical Museum, Philadelphia, PA traveling exhibit features a life exhibit of Joe Hill (born Joel Emmanuel Hagglund), an early 20th-century Swedish-American labor activist, cartoonist, and songwriter and member of Industrial Workers of the World. Hill was born in Gavle, Sweden, the same port city many of the early Bishop Hill Colonists sailed from on their way to America.  Executed in 1915 by the State of Utah for a double murder in Salt Lake City, he quickly became a martyr for the cause of organized labor. His songs and letters, as well as tributes to him, galvanized striking workers throughout the 20th Century. Now, 100 years after his death, Hill’s life, and work still inspire.  The New York Daily News  November 19, 2015, article provides a background of Joe Hill, a man who gave us the phrase “pie in the sky” and left a legacy that has inspired generations of musicians — from Woody Guthrie to Joan Baez, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen.

Travel the Henry County back roads to National Historic Bishop Hill, IL and view the “free” public exhibit, through September 30, 2017.
