Have an outdoor adventure in Henry County!

Are the back roads beckoning you toward a weekend in nature? Load up the car with your outdoor gear and start driving!

What’s your pleasure?

If you’re coming from an urban area, you may not often get the opportunity to lose yourself out in the woods. There might be some weekends when you’re ready to pass by all the shopping and dining and culturally significant attractions and just stay and play outside. Henry County is a great destination when your desire is to truly get away.

The water weekend

If you like to fish, on or off a boat — or if you love to boat, with or without fishing — you’ve come to the right place. Rent a canoe or kayak at the Geneseo Campground if you don’t have one (or don’t feel like hauling yours here). You’re right on the Hennepin Canal, where you can fish for bluegill, crappie, walleye or bass. The Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park is a 104-mile linear park that follows the historic canal, now used only for recreation. As if one state park wasn’t enough, we also have the Johnson Sauk Trail State Park, which also offers boating and fishing. It’s stocked with largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, channel catfish and bullhead. Of course, both parks also offer an abundance of other outdoor fun, including hiking, picnicking and camping. Scott Family Park is another good place to swim, fish and camp.

The greens weekend

Do you play golf or disc golf? We have plenty of opportunity for both! We have many public golf courses available, with options that are just right for both serious and casual players. Courses abound for disc golf, too!

The exercise weekend

Do you want to get out there and bike or hike? We have the perfect, picturesque trails including horseback riding trails, too (though maybe that’s more for the horse’s exercise.) Following along the old Hennepin Canal is a lovely way to see wildflowers and wildlife. Of course, some of our back roads are just begging for you to hit them on two wheels. With 96 miles worth of surfaced bike trails, you won’t run out of places to ride. Consider the Adventure Cyclist Association Northern Tier Bike Trail and check out our rolling prairies. The American Discovery Trail takes you from one major river to another (the Illinois and the Mississippi) and the Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park is always a nature-lover’s delight. And if you don’t want to haul your wheels on vacation, the Geneseo Campground rents pedal carts and bikes for riding along the canal! Looking for a twist to add some extra interest to your day out? While you’re out there, give geocaching a try!

The winter weekend

Don’t let a little cold weather keep you out of nature. Henry County is a great place to go snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. The longest snowmobile trail in Illinois is along the Hennepin Canal! Plan your route with this snowmobile trail map. Of course, ice fishing is another winter possibility. And don’t forget, when you hike in cold weather you don’t have to deal with any mosquitoes.

Make it a camping weekend!

If you’re here to enjoy the great outdoors, spend the night in one of our campgrounds, many of which feature many outdoor recreation possibilities of their own. Bring your tent or RV, or just rent a cabin. We have many to choose from!
