During the winter months, it can be tempting to wait out the weather inside the walls of your own home. However, getting away from your comfort zone and trying something new might be the perfect prescription for fighting the winter blues. In Henry County, there are many opportunities to hide away from the elements by warming up with delicious food and drinks, getting to know our cultural heritage, or perusing locally-made wares and other unique finds at any of our delightful shops.

Embrace the outdoors this winter

Although you’d have a wonderful time in Henry County staying in one of our cozy lodging properties, the seasonal highlight for many in the area is the outdoor activities we have available! You can enjoy frosty nature, get active, and find adventure all around beautiful Henry County. But our two all-season parks take the cake for having the most to offer in the winter—Johnson-Sauk Trail State Recreation Area and Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park.

The trails at Johnson-Sauk Trail State Recreation Area are great for cross-country skiing, and its 58-acre lake has a lot to offer for those who love ice skating and ice fishing. Camping is also available in the winter for those willing to tough out the cold. The Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park is awe-inspiring in the winter. The dazzling canal is worth visiting to even just take a picture, but for the outdoor enthusiast, there’s so much more to behold. Ice fishing, ice skating, and cross-country skiing are all available at Hennepin Canal, but their main attraction for winter outdoor enthusiasts is their snowmobiling trails.

A snowmobiling haven

Snowmobiling can be an exciting break from the stagnancy of winter. It’s also a great way to explore places you’d otherwise never venture to against a beautiful snowy backdrop. Did you know that the Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park is home to Illinois’ longest snowmobile trail? It’s true and it’s amazing—91 miles long! Come plan a trek along the trail this winter and make sure to include stops to any restaurants and stores along the trail.

The Purple Onion in Annawan is a local favorite for breakfast but also has great lunch and dinner specials. Their homemade tenderloin is one of the best in the area!

If you’re in Geneseo and looking for something a little different, you can’t go wrong with the State Street Café. With fresh-baked desserts and fresh made-to-order meals, it’s worth making a pit stop here.
