Special Kneads Bakery
This little bakery in Galva has a heart-warming story to go along with its fresh-baked goodies.
In 2018 Margaret Cortes lost her job. At around the same time, a bakery that had operated for 80 years in Galva was closing because the owners were retiring. Margaret had an inspiration. She purchased the bakery so she could provide for her family while giving her special-needs son Frankie an opportunity to work and learn social skills. They named their new business Special Kneads Bakery.
Together Margaret and Frankie bake homemade breads, muffins, scones, brownies, and all kinds of other scrumptious desserts every morning. Sometimes you get lucky and they have piping hot biscuits and gravy! Most days they sell out before closing time, but you can usually order fresh bread or goodies in advance to make sure you get what you want.
Frankie helps bake and also makes deliveries around town in his brand new Club Car Onward golf cart. He received the gift of his new delivery vehicle when he and Margaret were invited to New York to appear on the Strahan, Sara and Keke show. That was quite an adventure!
They are always working on growing their business. They recently hired a trained baker to help with production and create new items. They have also added a Tuesday evening to-go meal to their offerings, which is available from 4-6 pm.
Take a drive to Galva and stop by Special Kneads Bakery for a treat and a smile from Frankie. Both are definitely worth the trip!
